What Foods Are Good For Your Teeth?

Our teeth and gums are part of the body hence they need to be maintained through good nutrition. Teeth are important, and we cannot do without them.

  1. Foods rich in calcium and phosphorus
    1. Acidic foods or different minerals may cause erosion of the enamel. Calcium and phosphorus are minerals that restore the enamel part of the teeth. Consuming foods rich in these minerals is therefore important.
    2. Calcium best sources
      • Foods rich in calcium include: yoghurt, cheese (hard, aged), seafood, milk (low fat), tofu, almonds.
    3. Phosphorus best sources
      • Red meat, eggs, pumpkin seeds, brazil nuts, almond.
  2. Foods rich in Vitamin D
    • Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium better. Best sources include: fish, egg yolks and cod liver oil.
  3. Foods rich in vitamin C
    • Vitamin C strengthens blood vessels and helps reduce inflammation (swelling of gums). Best sources include: oranges, broccoli, kale and strawberries.
  4. Cheese
    • Cheese helps lower the acid level in the mouth which plaque hates it for. It also increases saliva production which washes some of the bacteria off.
  5. Milk
    • Lowers the acid level in the mouth fighting tooth decay.
  6. Water
    • Water keeps saliva levels high which contains proteins and nutrients that naturally fight plaque.
  7. Green tea
    • Green tea offers up natural antioxidant compound that prevents plaque from accumulating, reducing the risk of cavities and bad breath. It is best taken without sugar.
  8. Whole grains
    • Consumption of whole grain (oatmeal and brown rice) reduces gum disease.
